Webster J. Stiles establishes Stiles Machinery

Web Stiles founded the company from the back of his station wagon in 1965. With the assistance of Paul Longoni, Web began establishing partnerships with woodworking machinery manufacturers to serve the U.S. market.

Web also had an existing lumber supply company at the time, B&W Wood Products – which he operated with his five sons, Roger, Phil, Gregg, Don and David.

Stiles today is one of the world’s leading providers of advanced manufacturing equipment. We serve innovators in woodworking, architecture, furniture, fixtures, transportation, alternative energy and aerospace—propelling their success to new heights and dimensions.

Stiles begins selling Homag Edgebanders; initiating a 35 year partnership

Stiles moves into the new corporate headquarters building at 3965 44th Street, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Responding to the demands of a growing client base, Stiles moves into a new headquarters facility that is able to provide an expanded spare parts department and product showroom. Located within one mile of the Kent County airport, the new Stiles location was ideally suited to the requirements of its expanded mission.

1983 - 1984

Stiles opens a new satellite office and technology showroom in High Point, North Carolina to bring local sales and service support to the booming southeast market.

Stiles reaches $20.2 million in sales with 45 employees

Altendorf America is created to establish the new Stiles Dealer Sales Network for serving the small- to medium-size manufacturing markets

Stiles acquires exclusive U.S. distribution for Altendorf sliding table saws in January of 1985 upon an intentional strategy focused on expanding business for the standard machines. Steve Jones partners with Altendorf Export Manager St. John Crabtree to formulate a plan to launch the Altendorf America division and build up a network of dealers to distribute a more standardized machine portfolio.

Stemming from the success of this plan, today, Stiles proudly boasts the most competitive dealer distribution network in the industry.

1986

Stiles establishes Rebuild Services to help customers extend the life of their machinery with precision remanufactured components

Beginning with the rebuilding of gluepots and spindle motors, Stiles initiates an innovative focus on refurbishing critical components of manufacturing equipment. Today, the program has grown to also include industrial electronics, vacuum pumps and machining aggregates to provide customers with remanufactured parts at a much more affordable price.

A Stiles Advisory Board is formed with five senior executives to give them the opportunity to reflect outside normal business days. The first meeting was held in Traverse City, MI.

Stiles Education is established to provide customers with a certified training platform to help educate and retain their personnel

On average, over 9.4 out of 10 of your orders are shipped complete from our stock without the need to backorder a part – equating to 12% above the industry average of 82%. Stiles maintains a database that contains over 140,000 items and over $40 million in spare parts, because having the correct part available when you need it is the cornerstone to the business.

Holzma US merges with Stiles Machinery to better serve the panel sizing market

Holzma US became a division of Stiles Machinery in January of 1992 as a result of the merger. Under the leadership of Bill Pitt, Holzma US brought an intentional focus on panel sizing technology to the U.S. manufacturing market. This focus included specific saw configurations and features with the American panel processing customer in mind.

Holzma remains as the largest manufacturer of panel sizing saws and systems in the world.

Stiles e-Tech is formed to assist customers in maximizing their machinery investments and performances

Greg Jansen initiates a formal sales focus on enhancement technologies to help customers maximize their production capabilities. While he uses a conventional restaurant oven to service gluepots back in 1994, Jansen’s team now owns a number of industrial ovens that also apply Teflon coating to further enhance and improve the life of customers’ gluepots.

Stiles e-Tech remains aimed at helping customers apply new innovations to their manufacturing processes and improve factory efficiencies, performances and quality control.

By 1997, Stiles had outgrown the original location and after multiple expansions it became obvious that a new facility was required. The decision was made to design and build a new location that would represent the company’s position as the largest independent woodworking machinery supplier in North America.

The new building features state-of-the-art conferencing, an expanded technology showroom and the facilities for Stiles’ E-tech and Rebuild group. Stiles welcomes visitors and customers from all over the world, and the company needed a facility to reflect this market position.

Stiles enters the solid wood market with the KENTWOOD brand of moulders, rip saws and more

Stiles carefully researches worldwide trends to develop a revolutionary line of solid wood machines specific to the U.S. market’s needs. The Kentwood line is launched to provide solid wood operators with high performance woodworking tools at an affordable price without compromising on features and quality.

Today, Stiles offers nearly 50 machines for moulding and planning profiles, ripping and crosscutting materials, optimizing manufacturing flow and more under the Kentwood machinery line.

2009

Stiles launches the IRONWOOD product line to expand solutions for the solid wood market including spindle shapers, planers, jointers and more

Ironwood, a brand of Stiles Machinery, is introduced in 2009 with boring and drilling equipment and straight line rip saws. The brand expands in 2010 to include our series of jointers, planers, shapers and cut off saws – and has grown to now offer a series of Ironwood wide-belt sanders. These machines are packaged with value in mind – quality equipment for the right price. Stiles has always been dedicated to helping entrepreneurs and small businesses in the woodworking industry, and these classic woodworking machines are the newest additions.

2009

WEEKE North America is established as a joint venture between Stiles, WEEKE Maschinenbau GmbH, and the HOMAG Group AG to begin manufacturing CNC routers in the U.S.

Weeke North America was formed on October 19, 2008 as a joint venture between Weeke Bohrsystem GmbH, the majority shareholder, Homag Holzbearbeitungssysteme AG and Stiles Machinery Inc. Located in Grand Rapids, MI, Weeke North America’s 30,000-square-foot operation utilizes locally sourced parts to produce CNC machines to order, while maintaining minimal inventory and still offering short delivery times.

Due to the extreme success of this manufacturing strategy, the Weeke North America (WNA) management board has recently approved the contract for a new production facility. The new 100,000-square-foot building will be built in the same business park near the existing WNA site. Overhead cranes, better material flow, more production space and additional office spaces for the growing work force are some of the key benefits of the new location. Today, over 25 Weeke CNC machines are manufactured out of the WNA factory every month.

2014

The HOMAG Group AG increases its shareholding in Stiles to 100%, Peter Kleinschmidt retires and Christian Vollmers becomes president of Stiles

The HOMAG Group AG increases its shareholding in Stiles to 100%, intensifying the successful partnership that has been in place for over 30 years.

After 52 years in the industry, Peter Kleinschmidt retires as President. He sees the HOMAG Group as the ideal partner to build on his life’s achievement and continue the customer focused growth strategies for the future. Peter Kleinschmidt remains on the Board of Directors. Christian Vollmers, current president of HOMAG Canada, succeeds Mr. Kleinschmidt as president of Stiles.
