There can be a number of reasons why your machine won’t start and you need some steps to help determine the issue quickly. If you have an idea of where the trouble may be coming from before running around the shop screaming for help or making that panicked call to the company president you can be up and running quietly and quickly.
Computers are a regular culprit in a machine that won’t start. Most machines have a similar computer boot up sequence; turn on the main switch, boot the computer up, log on and then calibrate. But if that doesn’t work there are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot. First, turn on the main disconnect and determine whether there are lights coming on and if the computer is booting. If the computer isn’t booting, then the trouble could be with the UPS batteries-an easy quick fix. If the computer is working and there is nothing on the screen, then it could be a monitor or video problem which we can test with an office monitor. If there is a display with another monitor, you computer will require service, which we can provide.
Another relatively common reason why a machine won’t start is a tripped breaker. This can occur when operators clean the cabinet using an air hose and the dust and debris in certain areas cause a short. We recommend vacuuming debris instead of blowing it out. The same issue can occur during routine checks or cleaning a cabinet if a contact gets bumped and shuts off. In the case of a tripped breaker or contact overload, each auxiliary contact may need to be checked with a meter.
Finally, if you turn the machine on and the lights and computer go on but the machine won’t start then the power may be the problem. If you lose a leg of power or the power is low on one, you may have enough power for lights and computer, but not enough power coming in to run the machine. If the machine is equipped with a phase control relay, this may also prevent the machine from stating and give a warning.
